Sylvia Plath (1932-1963) nació en Boston, Massachusetts, y estudió en el Smith College. En 1955 fue a la Universidad de Cambridge con una beca Fullbright, donde conoció a Ted Hughes, con quien después se casó. Cuando su título más conocido, Ariel, fue publicada póstumamente, A. Álvarez escribió en el Observer:
