A esas grandes empresas les interesan más los beneficios que la salud. Eso quedó claro cuando los gobiernos se apresuraron a producir vacunas durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Detrás de los tan cacareados avances científicos, realizados sobre todo con fondos públicos, las grandes empresas encontraron nuevas formas de sacar miles de millones más a los gobiernos de Occidente mientras abandonaban al Sur Global. Pero este es sólo un episodio reciente de una larga historia de financiarización de la medicina: desde la rapaz comercialización por Purdue del OxyContin, altamente adictivo, pasando por la subida de precios que hizo Martin Shkreli de un medicamento que salva vidas, hasta los 4,5 millones de sudafricanos privados innecesariamente de medicación contra el VIH/sida. Desde la década de 1990, las grandes farmacéuticas han hecho todo lo posible por proteger su propiedad mediante el sistema de patentes. Como resultado, el negocio no se ha centrado en la investigación de nuevos medicamentos, sino en la creación de monopolios. Este sistema ha contribuido a reestructurar nuestra economía, alejándola de la invención y la producción para beneficiar a los mercados financieros. Ha modificado radicalmente la relación entre países ricos y pobres, ya que el acceso a nuevos medicamentos y el permiso para fabricarlos se vigilan sin piedad. En respuesta, Dearden ofrece una vía hacia un sistema más justo y seguro para todos.
