Cuando, tras el armisticio, Céline dio a la imprenta su tercera novela, Guignol's band (1944), solo había terminado la primera parte de un proyecto que veinte años más tarde, y muerto ya su autor, se vería completado con la publicación de la segunda parte, titulada El puente de Londres (1964). En este volumen el lector encontrará las dos partes de lo que siempre fue una sola obra, fracturada por el encarcelamiento de Céline. La influencia en su escritura de los panfletos que causaron su exilio se acusa en el estilo de esta novela que transcurre en Londres, entre 1915 y 1916. El protagonista, el seudoautobiográfico Ferdinand, se mueve a través del grotesco inframundo londinense. En este angustioso escenario, plagado de proxenetas, prostitutas, prestamistas y adivinos, policías y pirómanos, la ilusión de vivir se halla desnuda ante la disolución social y psicológica de aquellos que ya no albergan ninguna esperanza. «Una pesadilla de frenético nihilismo que se expresa en un lenguaje agresivamente innovador, como un tartamudeo que arrasa todas las normas convencionales y que reúne sin cesar un argot colérico, obsceno y lírico a la vez.» José María ValverdeEl protagonista, el seudoautobiográfico Ferdinand, se mueve a través del grotesco inframundo londinense.Louis-Ferdinand Céline (Courbevoie, 1894-París, 1961), uno de los máximos exponentes de las letras francesas y de la literatura contemporánea, participó en la Primera Guerra Mundial, en la que resultó gravemente herido, y en 1924 se doctoró en medicina y trabajó cuatro años para la Sociedad de Naciones. Su primera novela, Viaje al fin de la noche (1932), lo reveló como un narrador excepcional. Siguieron: Muerte a crédito (1936), el libelo antisemita Bagatelles pour un massacre (1938); L#école des cadavres (1938), presentimiento apocalíptico de la inminente catástrofe, y Guignol#s band (1943). La extraña conducta de este negador de todo, colaboracionista del gobierno de Vichy, le obligó a huir a Alemania y Dinamarca, donde fue condenado a muerte y después indultado. En 1952 regresó a Francia y pe rmaneció en París hasta el año de su muerte. Fruto de las amargas experiencias de sus últimos años son Fantasía para otra ocasión (1952 y 1954), De un castillo a otro (1957), Norte (1960), Rigodón (1969) y Cartas de la cárcel (1998), un libro en el que se recogen las cartas que el autor escribió a su mujer, Lucete Destouches y a su abogado, Thorvald Mikkelsen, desde la cárcel Vestre Faengsel entre 1945 y 1947.
