Synopsis La república romana de 1849 y su constitución
La mañana del 9 de febrero de 1849, Roma, una vez más, se convirtió en el centro del mundo. Cuando Giuseppe Galletti, presidente de la Asamblea constituyente romana, leyó el Decreto Fundamental de la República desde el balcón del Palazzo Senatorio, el clima político de Italia y de Europa mutó de forma radical. El bienio que se abre en el año 1848 representó evidentemente uno de los momentos cruciales de la historia europea, donde la revolución y la consiguiente entrada en escena de los Estados Pontificios dieron un espaldarazo a los postulados del liberalismo y a los anhelos de una Italia unida en torno a la Ciudad Eterna, faro de la península italiana desde que sus míticos fundadores se amamantaron de la Luperca. Es esta, por tanto, una historia que no deja indiferente a nadie, especialmente al saber que en pleno siglo xix un Papa tuvo que poner pies en polvorosa y dejar atrás el Vaticano ante la incertidumbre y los posibles peligros que comenzaron a rodear a su persona. Ante este vacío de poder, el pueblo romano se echó a las calles, tomó las instituciones y no tardó en erigir un nuevo Estado romano. Este, encabezado por líderes del nacionalismo italiano como Mazzini o Garibaldi, dio paso a una serie de reformas políticas, civiles y sociales que no solo encumbraron a Roma como referente del liberalismo político, sino que despertaron la animadversión de unas potencias europeas que no podían permitir que la chispa iniciada en Roma arrasara con una Europa todavía empapada de absolutismo.
