Cuando, en la primavera de 1919, André Breton y Philippe Soupault conciben y experimentan el método de escritura del que nacerán no sólo Los campos magnéticos, sino también los textos «automáticos» de la historia del movimiento surrealista, el primero tiene 23 años y el segundo 22. Cuenta André Breton: «La práctica cotidiana de la escritura automática ?a veces le dedicábamos, Soupault y yo, de ocho a diez horas consecutivas? nos llevó a observaciones de gran alcance, pero que sólo se coordinarían y se aprovecharían totalmente más tarde. Aun así vivíamos en plena euforia, casi en estado de ebriedad por descubrir sin cesar (. . . ). Una euforia no exenta de angustia debida a las propiedades alucinógenas del automatismo consumido o producido en dosis intensivas.» Cuenta Aragon: «Con el tiempo, una cierta unidad se ha establecido; Los campos magnéticos pasó a ser la obra de un único autor de dos cabezas, y la mirada doble fue lo que permitió a Breton y a Soupault avanzar por el camino en el que nadie les había precedido, entre tinieblas en las que hablaban en voz alta. Así surgió ese texto incomparable al que hay que considerar hoy en día como el momento, al alba de nuestro siglo, en el que toda la historia de la escritura dio un giro total; no es libro por el que Mallarmé quería que el mundo acabara, sino aquél por el cual todo empieza.» Recordemos que, mientras Breton y Soupault, una vez desmovilizados de la guerra del 14, se unirían en la gran aventura de la escritura automática, en Zurich los dadaístas ya habían hecho las mil y una; en París, Marcel Duchamps le había colgado el bigote sacrílego a la Gioconda; en Rusia, se vivía aún la esperanza de la auténtica Revolución; en fin, el mundo conocía el período más intensamente creativo y dinámico desde el Renacimiento. El hombre que dijo «Me gusta más que me llamen Philippe Dada que Philippe Soupault. Cuestión de gustos», tiene hoy 86 años y vive en París. Es uno de los poetas más importantes de nuestro siglo y, según Breton, fue siempre el «jaimito» del grupo surrealista. De André Breton nada hay que añadir a lo que el lector o comprador de este libro ya sabe. . .
