La aplicación de métodos bibliométricos para la evaluación de la
ciencia, más concretamente en las disciplinas del ámbito de las Ciencias de la
Salud está cada vez más difundido. No ocurre lo mismo con la Cirugía Oral y
Maxilofacial, especialidad médico-quirúrgica que se ocupa de la prevención,
estudio, diagnóstico, tratamiento y rehabilitación de la patología de la boca,
cara y territorio craneofacial, así como de los órganos y estructuras
cervicales relacionadas directa o indirectamente con los mismos. Los estudios
bibliométricos sobre una especialidad, a través de las publicaciones
científicas, permiten extraer información cuantitativa y cualitativa sobre la
misma, con el fin de determinar patrones de comportamiento y tendencias en el
consumo, elaboración y difusión de la información científica. Comprobada la
escasez de investigaciones a nivel mundial y corroborando que al inicio de
nuestro estudio no existían estudios bibliométricos sobre la Cirugía Oral y
Maxilofacial de ningún país situado entre los 20 primeros productores
científicos del mundo, se planificó y desarrolló el presente estudio, con el
fin de aportar los datos pertinentes que hagan posible dilucidar la
participación de autores españoles en la literatura científica internacional de
la Cirugía Oral y Maxilofacial durante el periodo de estudio 2005-2014.
The application of bibliometric methods for the evaluation of science, specifically in the disciplines of the field of health sciences is increasingly widespread. Not so with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, medical-surgical specialty that deals with prevention, research, diagnosis, treatment and re- habilitation of the pathology of the mouth, face and craniofacial territory and organs and cervical structures related directly or indirectly related thereto. Bibliometric studies on a specialty, through scientific publications, allow to extract quantitative and qualitative information on the same, in order to determine behavior patterns and trends in consumption, production and dissemination of scientific information. Proven shortage of global research and corroborating that at the beginning of our study there were no bibliometric studies of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of any country situated between the top 20 scientific producers in the world, was planned and developed the present study, in order to provide relevant data to make it possible to elucidate the participation of Spanish authors in international scientific literature of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery during the study period 2005-2014.
