The application of bibliometric methods for the evaluation of science, specifically in the disciplines of the field of health sciences is increasingly widespread. Not so with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, medical-surgical specialty that deals with prevention, research, diagnosis, treatment and re- habilitation of the pathology of the mouth, face and craniofacial territory and organs and cervical structures related directly or indirectly related thereto. Bibliometric studies on a specialty, through scientific publications, allow to extract quantitative and qualitative information on the same, in order to determine behavior patterns and trends in consumption, production and dissemination of scientific information. Proven shortage of global research and corroborating that at the beginning of our study there were no bibliometric studies of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of any country situated between the top 20 scientific producers in the world, was planned and developed the present study, in order to provide relevant data to make it possible to elucidate the participation of Spanish authors in international scientific literature of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery during the study period 2005-2014.
