A generation on, and the post 9/11 world is still reeling from its aftermath. The USA has all but isolated itself from the rest of humanity, and the remainder of the planet is in turmoil - the conflict over Kashmir has finally erupted, and the need for sustainable energy is more urgent and competitive than ever before. Our protagonist, Jake, emerges from a solo hunting trip in the Wyoming Tetons, into a country which has been abandoned by its people. The streets are filled only with silence, and heavy with portent. What could possibly have caused such a sudden mass exodus? In fear for his family, and his life, Jake treks across North America towards his home in Virginia, looking for answers, for clues, any sign of civilisation... Gerald Berry's fascinating glipse of the near future and its possibilities, keeps the reader gripped, whilst also, ultimately, encouraging faith in humanity, in the face of an uncertain and frightenng future.
