La electroquímica es la rama de la química física que estudia la interrelación entre las reacciones químicas y la electricidad. Desde esta disciplina, se abordan los cambios químicos que tienen lugar como consecuencia del paso de una corriente eléctrica, o bien los procesos inversos, en los que se emplea una reacción química como fuente de energía para producir una corriente eléctrica. En ambos casos, los pasos de energía eléctrica a energía química, y viceversa, están mediados por la transferencia de electrones. La electroquímica tiene una fuerte presencia en muchos de los productos que se usan o se consumen de forma cotidiana. Metales como el aluminio, el sodio, el magnesio o el calcio se obtienen a partir de métodos electroquímicos, así como el cloro y la sosa caustica, dos de los productos químicos más empleados a nivel mundial. Las reacciones electroquímicas también están detrás de las pilas y baterías, fundamentales en las sociedades modernas, y el recubrimiento de objetos con metales o con óxidos metálicos a partir de la electrodeposición es crucial en ingeniería de superficies para evitar otro fenómeno electroquímico: la corrosión.Este libro aborda los aspectos fundamentales de la electroquímica desde una perspectiva teórica y de una forma comprensible para estudiantes de universidad, personal investigador y personal técnico e ingenieril con interés por este apasionante campo de conocimiento.
