¿Se acuerda alguien del conquense Julián Romero de Ibarrola? Nació hace cinco siglos. Fue uno de los soldados españoles más famosos del siglo XVI. Un hombre que, desde su adolescencia, pasó la mayor parte de su vida junto a la muerte, matando en la lucha y evitando ser muerto. Dicen que vivió con honor y valor hasta el último día. Fue muy apreciado por la mayoría de quienes lo conocieron, admirado y temido por sus hazañas. A pesar de graves episodios como una matanza en Naarden (Holanda) en 1572 o el incendio de la ciudad belga de Amberes en 1576, sobre los cuales aún se debate su grado de responsabilidad, es tratado con respeto e incluso benevolencia por los historiadores, incluidos los holandeses. Participó descisivamente en las batallas de Pinkie Cleugh, San Quintín, Gravelinas, Malta, Jemmingen, Mons y Mook, entre otras, y estuvo a las órdenes del duque de Alba en los hechos de Naarden, Amberes y Bruselas.Con cincuenta y nueve años era cojo, manco, tuerto y sordo de un oído, no había vuelto a pisar tierra española desde hacía doce años, había recorrido todo el escalafón militar —desde tamboril a maestre de campo general—, había luchado en todos los frentes europeos, su valor había sido reconocido en persona por Enrique VIII de Inglaterra y por Felipe II. Una vez más, reclamado por don Juan de Austria, reiniciaba el Camino Español desde Lombardía a Flandes. El 13 de octubre de 1577 cayó fulminado desde su caballo.
