Pablo Picasso (Málaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973). Picasso wurde in Spanien geboren und es wird sogar gesagt, dass er zu zeichnen begann, bevor er sprechen konnte.Bereits im Alter von sieben Jahren begann er unter Anleitung seines Vaters zu malen. Er konnte Stunden voller glücklicher Konzentration damit verbringen, Spiralen mit einer Bedeutung zu zeichnen, die nur er allein kannte. Seine ersten Bilder malte er in den Sand. Diese frühe Art, sich auszudrücken, enthielt das Versprechen eines seltenen Talents. Picassos Vater war selbst Maler und Lehrer an der Kunstschule der Stadt. Picasso lernte von ihm die Grundlagen der akademischen Malerei. Dann setzte er sein Studium an der Kunstakademie von Madrid fort, erhielt aber nie sein Diplom. Picasso, der noch keine 18 Jahre alt war, hatte den Höhepunkt seiner Rebellion erreicht und lehnte die anämische Ästhetik des Akademismus und die Banalität des Realismus ab. Natürlich schloss er sich jenen an, die sich Modernisten nannten, den Künstlern und nonkonformistischen Schriftstellern, die Sabartés "die Elite des katalanischen Gedankens" nannte und die sich im Künstlercafé Els Quatre Gats trafen. In den 1899er und 1900er Jahren waren die einzigen Gegenstände, die nach Picassos Auffassung gemalt werden konnten, diejenigen, die die letzte Wahrheit widerspiegelten: die vergängliche Natur des menschlichen Lebens und die Unvermeidbarkeit des Todes. Seine ersten Werke, katalogisiert unter dem Namen "Blaue Periode" (1901-1904), bestehen aus blau gefärbten Gemälden, inspiriert von einer Reise durch Spanien und dem Tod seines Freundes Casagemas. Obwohl Picasso selbst häufig auf der inneren und subjektiven Natur der blauen Periode bestand, wurde die Entstehung und insbesondere dieser blaue Monochromatismus jahrelang als Ergebnis verschiedener ästhetischer Einflüsse erklärt. Zwischen 1905 und 1907 trat Picasso in eine neue Phase ein, die als "rosa Periode" bezeichnet wird und sich durch einen eher spielerischen Stil auszeichnet, der von Orange und Rosa dominiert wird. In Gosal, im Sommer 1906, gewann der weibliche Akt für Picasso eine erhebliche Bedeutung - eine entpersonalisierte, ursprüngliche, einfache Nacktheit.
