Es necesario, y hasta urgente, enseñar hoy a «pensar como se debe», con rectitud y corrección, sin apartarse de lo real, en un esfuerzo riguroso que contrarreste el mero parecer del individuo, para alcanzar la verdad. A esta tarea se dedicó el célebre abad de Bec cuando, a principios de 1080, redactó una trilogía sobre los problemas de la verdad, la rectitud, el mal, la omnipotencia divina y el libre arbitrio. El primero de esos tratados lleva por título De veritate; el segundo, De libertate arbitrii(Sobre la libertad del arbitrio); el tercero, De casu diaboli(La caída del diablo). En De veritate, Anselmo busca iluminar la relación que existe entre la virtud moral, la verdad y la justicia, al tiempo que pretende enseñar a sus monjes cómo conectar la verdad con la vida real. Para ello propone la categoría de «rectitud», es decir, aquel camino correcto que ha de seguir todo individuo que desee conformarse con la única Verdad, ya que, en último término, la adecuación a la voluntad divina es para el hombre el modo seguro de ser verdadero. Anselmo de Canterbury (1033-1109) es uno de los grandes teólogos y filósofos del siglo XI. Se le considera, con toda justicia, el padre de la escolástica.
