Una obra maestra de la literatura rusa. Vladimir K. Arseniev (1872-1930) joven oficial de la armada imperial rusa que en 1900 fue enviado desde San Petersburgo a Vladivostok y pasó treinta años en el lejano este ruso. Durante este tiempo, realizó doce expediciones que le llevaron a través de la impenetrable e inexplorada taiga de Primorsky y Khabarovsky, donde realizó importantes descubrimientos sobre la naturaleza y la geografía física y humana de estas regiones remotas de la Siberia oriental. Arseniev documentó sus expediciones copiosa y cuidadosamente de manera que, a lo largo de su vida, escribió más de sesenta artículos y su trabajo apareció en cerca de veinte libros. Pero su obra más leída es la trilogía de libros que documentan las expediciones que realizó entre 1906 y 1910 al sur de Sihotè-Alin# (hoy, Corea del Norte), escritos con el lirismo de un poeta y la astuta percepción de un meticuloso científico, en los que, a su lado y el de sus hombres, aparece el magnífico y único Dersu, el cazador Ussuri que aceptó conducirles a través de la taiga. Tanto Arseniev como Dersu Uzala entraron a formar parte, desde entonces, de la mitología del lejano oriente ruso. Cuando, en 1906, Vladimir Arseniev oficial del ejército del zar y explorador regresó a Moscú de su primera expedición, con mapas de los desconocidos confines de Siberia y fue recibido como un héroe, su primera reacción fue protestar y pedir reconocimiento para el que consideraba artífice real de la proeza: Dersu Uzala, el cazador Dersu; un hombre sencillo capaz de descifrar con prodigiosa intuición los secretos de la taiga; un guía que salvó la vida de Arseniev y de sus hombres en varias ocasiones mientras les descubría los caminos que convertían el bosque profundo en un lugar accesible donde los Ussuri, su pueblo, vivían en armonía con la naturaleza. Como tributo a Dersu, Vladimir Arseniev escribió las memorias de sus viajes que, además de obras maestras sobre la exploración y la etnografía no científica, son, por encima de todo, un hermoso homenaje a la amistad entre dos espíritus puros y un canto a la naturaleza. Un clásico de la literatura de viajes, cuya adaptación al cine por el director Akira Kurosawa mereció el Oscar a la mejor película extranjera en 1975.
