Aquel día, primero de Año Nuevo, irrumpió en la corte de Camelot un gigantesco y pavoroso caballero. Su piel, su frondosa barba y toda su ropa y su caballo eran tan verdes como la hierba. Los presentes se quedaron inmóviles, con los ojos clavados en el desconocido, que reta a toda la corte con una prueba aún más asombrosa. Así comienza Sir Gawain y el Caballero Verde, sin duda el texto artúrico más perfecto de las letras inglesas, un poema aliterativo del siglo XIV que J. R. R. Tolkien ha situado en la cumbre de la literatura medieval. Fantasía, movimiento, viveza en los detalles son algunas de las características principales del anónimo autor de este relato, cuyos episodios se suceden como láminas de un libro de horas. Pero la compleja arquitectura de este poema invita a una doble lectura, como establece el sentido alegórico medieval; por un lado, las pinceladas realistas que nos acercan a una época, a sus detalles cotidianos y a su sistema de valores; por otro, un preciso laberinto de símbolos que, como un itinerario paralelo, nos abre a nuevas y múltiples areas de significación. La introducción de Luis Alberto de Cuenca sobre la época y los aspectos literarios del poema, el postfacio de Jacobo F. J. Stuart sobre su interpretación simbólica, y un extenso epílogo («Sir Gawain y el Caballero Verde: Indra y Namuci») del prestigioso indólogo Ananda K. Coomaraswamy sobre las raíces míticas de la obra y su dimensión metafísica, hacen que este libro sea una perfecta introducción para aprender a leer un texto medieval desde diferentes ángulos de significación.
