El Estado ha sido uno de los principales focos de discusión en el campo de la teoría social más reciente y el eje para el estudio de la transición del capitalismo al socialismo. La polémica sobre su estructura, función y evolución ha llenado miles de páginas en la literatura social europea sobre todo a partir de la crisis del 68. Desde el estructuralismo de Althusser, que dio pie a las aportaciones de Poulantzas y sus posteriores polémicas con Miliband, su análisis ha supuesto una renovación de las categorías analíticas aplicadas a la sociedad capitalista actual. En Alemania los derivacionistas (Hirsch, Offe) iniciaron, por entonces, su crítica del Welfare State a través de las páginas de Leviathan; en Italia los problemas de la transición implicaron a Bobbio, Colletti e Ingrao, y la izquierda americana (O'Connor, Wright, Wolfe) se sumó a este debate a través de las revistas Kapitalestate y Socialist Review. Esta discusión tan apasionada responde a la omnipresencia que ha asumido el Estado, después de la segunda guerra mundial, en todas las facetas de la vida social, llegando a penetrar hasta los sitios más recónditos de la vida cotidiana del ciudadano, lo que ha modificado sustancialmente sus relaciones con la sociedad civil y sus instituciones (sindicatos, partidos, empresarios) y ha generado una crisis en los presupuestos tradicionales de su legitimación. El presente trabajo proporciona una minuciosa síntesis teórica de todo este debate contemporáneo sobre el Estado del Bienestar, analizando los escritos más recientes que recorren la literatura europea y americana sobre sus orígenes, su estructura y las relaciones institucionales que ha ido desarrollando con la sociedad civil y que le ha convertido en el motor y principal protagonista del cambio social.Josep Picó se especializó en Sociología en Italia (1967-70) y ha sido profesor visitante en el Clare Hall College de Cambridge. Actualmente enseña Sociología en la Universidad de Valencia y es miembro del consejo de redacción de la Revista Debats.
