El 18 de julio de 1936 estalló la Guerra Civil en nuestro país. Una contienda sangrienta cuyas secuelas llegan aún a nuestros días. A lo largo de los tres años que duró, hubo numerosas batallas que se hicieron famosas por el encarnizamiento con el que se desarrollaron (Belchite, Madrid, Jarama, Ebro, Brunete...). Sin embargo, entre las menos conocidas, hubo una en la que se dieron excepcionales circunstancias. Una división del Ejército Republicano, la 43, se enfrentó a lo más graneado del Ejército Nacional. El lugar donde trancurrieron esos hechos fueron los agrestes riscos de las montañas de Huesca durante el crudo invierno de 1938. A lo largo de los 66 días que duró el cerco, los 8.000 componentes de esa división se multiplicaron para contrarrestar el superior número de efectivos, tanto en hombres como en material, del enemigo. Este evento es descrito a través de los ojos de un muchacho de 18 años que se ve involucrado en esa batalla (La Bolsa de Bielsa), como otros tantos miles, sin que le movieran ideales políticos ni militares, pero con una primordial finalidad: sobrevivir. Hombres cuyo calzado eran abarcas envueltas en pedazos de saco, con la nieve casi por la cintura, moviéndose en lodazales cuando no nevaba, soportando unas gélidas temperaturas, asaltando posiciones enemigas para hacerse con munición y armas, poniendo en práctica su particular inventiva en mil y una estratagemas para ocasionar el máximo desconcierto entre el rival, lograron retirarse hasta Francia, al otro lado de los montes oscenses, en un alarde de organización y coraje. Días más tarde, los poco más de 7.000 que sobrevivieron, regresaron a España para participar en el último gran combate: La Batalla del Ebro.
