Un libro imprescindible para viajeros literarios. Cees Nooteboom (La Haya, 1933) ha dedicado la mayor parte de su tiempo desde los veinte años a viajar por todo el mundo; sus crónicas han sido publicadas en revistas y periódicos, y algunas de ellas recopiladas y editadas en La desaparición del muro. En calidad de editor de poesía de Avenue, ha realizado traducciones de Enzensberger, Neruda, Pavese y Hughes. Nooteboom ha publicado varios libros de poesía, ensayo #Cómo ser europeos (1995)# y una obra teatral, pero es su narrativa, traducida a diversos idiomas, la que supone su revelación internacional como uno de los escritores más interesantes de la última década: Rituales (1984) obtuvo los premios F. Bordewijk y Pegasus y fue llevada al cine por Herbert Curiel en 1988, En las montañas de Holanda (1987), La historia siguiente (1992, premio Europeo Aristeon de Literatura 1993 y XIII premio Grinzane Cavour), El desvío a Santiago (1993), ¡Mokusei! (1994), El día de todas las almas (2000), Hotel Nómada (2002), Perdido el Paraíso (2006), El enigma de la luz (2007) y Tumbas de poetas y pensadores (2007). Ha obtenido, además, la Medalla de Oro del Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid. Simone Sassen (Roermond, 1952) estudió Historia y trabajó en un museo de Amsterdam hasta que, en 1979, conoció a Cees Nooteboom, su marido. Desde entonces viajan juntos por el mundo, él escribiendo y ella haciendo fotografías. Sus imágenes acompañan los textos de Nooteboom en libros y revistas, aparecen como reportajes de viaje en publicaciones internacionales y han sido expuestas, entre otros lugares, en el Instituto Goethe de Rotterdam y en el de Bucarest y en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid. En este libro Cees Nooteboom visita a sus «muertos amados» para entablar diálogos con ellos, para verificar sus palabras, su inmortalidad. Este viajero impenitente se plantó ante las tumbas de genios de la talla de Pablo Neruda, Julio Cortázar, Antonio Machado, Rober Louis Stevenson, Yasunari Kawabata, Thomas Mann, James Joyce, Elias Canetti, Honoré de Balzac, Marcel Proust o Bertolt Brecht.
